We are one day away from the Virginia Tech football team officially kicking off the 2025 season against South Carolina in Atlanta. The two teams will battle in a standalone game on Sunday at 3 p.m. on ESPN, and on Friday, the SEC announced which conference the officiating crew will be from.
In a non-conference game, the officials are either from one of the two teams' conferences or from another. In the case of the Hokies and Gamecocks, the officiating crew will be from the Big 12. That is not the case in the other ACC/SEC matchups, as an SEC officiating crew will be at Clemson when the Tigers host LSU, and an ACC crew will be in Tallahassee when Florida State hosts Alabama. Syracuse and Tennessee will play on Saturday in Atlanta with a Big Ten crew calling that game.

Soccer ties Marshall on the road in Top 15 matchup
One week after opening the season with a stunning upset of No. 3 Ohio State, 1-0, in Blacksburg, the Hokies men's soccer team had a tough road test at No. 2 Marshall. After edging the Buckeyes and shutting out Canisius on Sunday, Virginia Tech vaulted into the Top 25 at No. 12, setting the stage for a Top 15 matchup in Huntington, West Virginia.
Virginia Tech got goals from Ian Marcano and Alex Perez, but Marshall got a pair of goals on penalty kicks in the second half, including the equalizier with 2:33 after a video review for the 2-2 final. It was the first two goals of the season allowed by the Hokies, but the good news is through three games, they haven't allowed a strike in the run of play. At 2-0-1, Virginia Tech returns to the pitch in one week, hosting Virginia at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
Sam Latona added to Virginia Tech coaching staff
During his career in Blacksburg, Sam Latona was a two-time All-American for Hokies wrestling coach Tony Robie, and despite the ACC Champion having graduated, he's not leaving anytime soon. Latona was hired as the program's recruiting coordinator.
“I’m very excited that Sam will be staying in Blacksburg with our program. Throughout his time as an athlete, he has consistently led by example in everything he does. Over the past six years, he has set the standard with his character, work ethic, and commitment. Sam connects effortlessly with everyone he encounters, and his future is incredibly bright. We hope to keep him in Blacksburg for a long time,” said Robie per a release from the school.
Robie is building a powerhouse program in the ACC at Virginia Tech, and adding Latona as the recruiting coordinator is only going to help land some of the top talent around the country in high school.
Volleyball opens season with sweep
The Hokies volleyball team opened the season by sweeping. apair of matches on Friday at UNC Wilmington in the Seahawk Classic. They beat North Carolina Central, 3-0, on Friday morning, before beating the host Seahawks by the same score. Virginia Tech closes out the weekend on Saturday with a match against Lidenwood at 11 a.m.
Women's soccer draws at Liberty
The 24th-ranked Hokies' women's soccer team tied Liberty, 1-1. Anna Weir found the back of the net for the second time this year in the first half, but the Flames salvaged the tie in the second half with a goal in the 86th minute.
