After beginning the season 7-33, the Colorado Rockies fired manager Bud Black after being swept over the weekend by the San Diego Padres. It has been a long couple of seasons in Denver as the Rockies struggle to compete in the loaded National League West with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

After firing Black, Colorado elevated Virginia Tech alum Warren Schaeffer from third base coach to interim manager for the rest of the season. Schaeffer played four seasons in Blacksburg, and now he’s going to manage an MLB team. It may not be the best situation for him to begin his managerial career, but it’s a start with a situation where winning and losing isn’t under the microscope as it is in most other baseball cities.
Softball committee chair explains Virginia Tech’s seeding
When the NCAA Tournament softball pairings were announced on Sunday night, Virginia Tech was not one of the Top 16 seeds to host the first weekend. Alabama and Oregon were the final two bubble hosts, and following the selection, committee chair, Kurt McGuffin, explained why the Hokies landed where they did and not at home this upcoming weekend in Blacksburg.
“With Oregon, their efficiency with what they did in the top 50 … that really struck with the committee in that they won 81% of their games in the top 50,” McGuffin said. “They did have three Quad 4 losses. That was the same as Virginia Tech, who had three Quad 4 losses. Virginia Tech did have five top-25 wins, but just one top-10 win in there with Oregon’s five top-10 wins. So, that was really close.
“There was a lot of discussion for those last teams — Alabama, Oregon, Virginia Tech and some other teams in there … because [of] the parity. … That’s where we landed with that one.”
Sure, there are games every team would like to have back at this time of the season when the results end up the way they did in terms of seeding, but I’m not sure what else the Hokies were supposed to do to get a Top 16 seed, other than to be in the SEC. What about Oregon's 62 RPI and Virginia Tech's 14? Some things don't make sense.
Baseball hosts Marshall
Fresh off a weekend two-game series sweep of Mercer at home, the Hokies baseball team will host Marshall on Tuesday before a huge final ACC series awaits them this weekend. Thursday through Saturday, Virginia Tech will host Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash that carries massive NCAA Tournament ramifications. Virginia will be coming into the series off an impressive sweep of Miami at home over the weekend to strengthen their NCAA Tournament hopes.
