The Virginia Tech football team had a scrimmage this past Saturday that was closed to the public. One position that head coach James Franklin would like settled at the end of spring practices is at quarterback. He has four players, Penn State transfer Ethan Grunkemeyer, North Carolina transfer Bryce Baker, incoming freshman Troy Huhn, and returner Kelden Ryan all taking reps.
After practice on Tuesday, Franklin was impressed with Huhn, who he said threw four touchdown passes in the scrimmage. Grunkemeyer is the projected starter when everything is all said and done and it's a young room, but there is no doubt that Huhn is imporessing this spring.
"Yeah, he had an unbelievable scrimmage on Saturday, statistically,'' said Franklin. "Think he threw four touchdowns and was very efficient. He had one interception. But he played really, really well. Played really well. He's very calm, he's very poised, very smart. He's wired the right way. I've been very impressed with him."
We'll see how things play out, but this could be a deep depth chart under center for Virginia Tech entering the summer ahead of the 2026 season.
ACC coaching carousel update
Things are happening fast in terms of the coaching carousel in the ACC. North Carolina State has hired Tennessee assistant Justin Gainey to replace Will Wade, who bolted for LSU after just one season in Raleigh. He was hired on Monday after the Vols were bounced in the Elite Eight by Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Another school that has hired a new coach is Boston College. The Eagles settled on Luke Murray, an assistant coach at UConn on Dan Hurley's staff. The Huskies made an incredible comeback on Sunday in the Elite Eight to stun Duke and advance to the Final Four again. Murray met with the media in Boston on Tuesday afternoon and will be traveling and finishing out the season with UConn in the Final Four this coming weekend. The Transfer Portal opens the day after the National Championship Game next Tuesday.
There has been no decision made yet in North Carolina as to who is going to replace Hubert Davis after he was fired following the Tar Heels' first-round NCAA Tournament loss to VCU. There are a lot of rumors out there, but with the school waiting on making a decision, it makes you wonder if they have zeroed in on a coach who will be coaching in the Final Four. Oh, the drama.
