With Christmas four days away and just a handful of men’s and women’s basketball games this month, it has still been a busy December for the Virginia Tech athletic department. There has been a lot of movement with the transfer portal for football and both basketball teams will close their non-conference schedule this weekend. That’s where we’ll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.
Women’s basketball to host Campbell
While the men are in Philadelphia to play Saint Joseph's in the 2024 Holiday Hoopfest, the women will be at Cassell Coliseum hosting Campbell in a non-conference game at noon on ACC Network Extra. At 8-3 and coming off a dominating win against Radford, this is the last tune-up for Megan Duffy and her team before ACC play kicks into high gear after the New Year.
Football players in the portal commit to other schools
The transfer portal has been busy in terms of players entering and leaving Blacksburg. Some of the bigger names have committed to SEC schools. Mansoor Delane is going to LSU, Mose Phillips is going to Missouri and Xavier Chaplin is heading to play at Auburn. This past week, some other Hokies’ have committed to schools.
Wide receiver Chance Fitzgerald is returning to his home state of Tennessee and joining former Virginia Tech teammate Gunner Givens at Vanderbilt. He struggled to get on the field for Tech with a loaded wide receiver room, but he was going to be a player who was going to battle for more playing time in 2025 with all the receivers leaving, but he’ll be looking to get that playing time with the Commodores.
Offensive lineman Malachi Madison entered the portal and he is one of the few who has not committed to an SEC school. Instead, he’ll be heading up north to attend and play at the University of Massachusetts.
