You have to think it has been a long week for the Virginia Tech women's basketball team. Seven days ago the Hokies opened ACC play with a loss at Duke, which is nothing to be ashamed of. However, they have spent the last 23 days on the road and they were finally able to get back to the friendly confines of Cassell Coliseum.
At 7-3 following the loss to the Blue Devils, the Hokies rebounded in a big way with a 73-34 non-conference victory over Radford, which entered the game with one win in their first ten games. Once again, it was a balanced effort for Megan Duffy's team, something that has been the norm in 2024-25 and will need to be for them to have success.
Utah transfer Lani White and Carleigh Wenzel helped the Hokies jump out to a commanding 39-12 halftime lead after allowing just four second-quarter points. Wenzel had 14 first-half points, which included her knocking down four of her five 3-point attempts. White was aggressive going to the basket and finished with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes and went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.
In the second half, the Hokies kept their foot on the gas and White added 10 more points and Wenzel eight to finish with 23 and 22 points respectively. Matilda Ekh finished with 11 points, and freshman Kayl Petersen had eight points and four rebounds. Rose Micheaux didn't score a point but had 10 rebounds.
Virginia Tech will have six days off before hosting Campbell on Saturday afternoon before the Christmas Break. They won't return to the court until after the New Year at home when ACC play continues when they host Florida State. With the way the Hokies have played in their first 11 games, ACC play is going to be tough, but fun this season.
