College football recruiting in the Class of 2026 is picking up with commitments, and before you know it, it'll be time for college basketball recruits in the class will start taking visits. Two players in the class who are ranked in the ESPN 100 are drawing some interest from Virginia Tech and head coach Mike Young.
Four-star Dakari Spear, who is the 28th-ranked player by ESPN, is headed to prep school in Texas to play for former NBA player Jermaine O'Neal at Dynamic Prep. He has drawn a ton of interest, as expected, recently from a number of programs, including the Hokies, along with ACC schools Syracuse and Virginia.
Spear is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who received an offer from Virginia Tech in May, the same day that Oklahoma offered him.
Another Top 100 player by ESPN is four-star Vaughn Karvala is a small forward from Arizona who is also drawing interest from Virginia Tech. The Scottsdale native can shoot the ball well from behind the arc, which would fit right into Young's offense. He is the 62nd-ranked player in the ESPN 100.
Louisville football making first visit to Blacksburg as ACC school?
We are two months away from the 2025 college football season kicking off, and Chris Vannini of The Athletic posted a wild stat on his X account about Louisville and Virginia Tech football. It was somewhat eye-opening.
Vannini posted that Louisville has been in the ACC for 10 years and their football team will be making their first-ever visit to Blacksburg as a conference member. That's right, the previous meetings have all been in Kentucky. The Hokies will host the Cardinals on Nov. 1, which begins a brutal final month for Brent Pry's team.
Football flip season hits ACC school
On Monday afternoon, Hokies football coach Brent Pry picked up a flip in the Class of 2026 when offensive lineman Tyrell Simpson flipped his commitment from Rutgers to Virginia Tech. Boston College coach Bill O'Brien lost a commitment from Class of 2027 quarterback Furian Inferrera, who flipped his commitment to Minnesota, according to Haynes Fawcett of On3 Sports. The Mater Dei High School product in California had been committed to the Eagles since February. This is a big loss for O'Brien, as not every day that BC picks up a commitment from a QB from California.
