After opening the 2026 season with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Old Dominion, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team, just two years removed from an Elite Eight appearance, looked to build on their start to the season at home on Sunday night at Thompson Field against VMI.
After peppering the Keydets in the first half and only finding the back of the net once, the Hokies scored two goals in the first 40 seconds of the second half and finished the half with five goals in a 6-0 victory to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Anna Weir opened the scoring in the first half before the floodgates opened in the second half.
Letizia Rossi scored 14 seconds into the second half before Johannah Bradly made it 3-0 23 seconds later. Ellie Robertson, Gabby Ciocca, and Eliana Salama also found the back of the net in the second half for Virginia Tech, which will host Liberty on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Virginia Tech women's basketball recruit drops top 10 schools
When it comes to five-star Class of 2027 guard Qandace Samuels, recruiting is going to pick up for the coveted Bishop McNamara product out of District Heights, Maryland. Megan Duffy and Virginia Tech have made the cut for her top 10 schools, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports.
According to London, Samuels is down to Virginia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Rutgers, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, LSU, and Vanderbilt. That is an impressive list of schools for the knockdown 3-point shooter. This is going to be a recruiting battle that Duffy and her staff are going to have to work hard to get into the mix as one of Samuels' final schools.

- After preseason exhibition games against VCU and James Madison, the Hokies men's soccer team will kick off the 2026 season on Thursday night in Columbus, Ohio, against Ohio State, in a rematch of last season's season opener in Blacksburg, which the Hokies won 1-0. Virginia Tech is looking to improve on a 7-4-5 season in 2025.
- As far as the Hokies volleyball team goes, they will have one more exhibition match on Thursday night at home aaginst Liberty before they begin their season on the weekend of Aug. 28 when they host the annual Hokie Invitational. They will have matches on the 28th against Ken State and William & Mary, before closing out the weekend with a match against Coppin State on Aug. 29.
