It's been almost two years since Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young was going to get a bigger NIL package for the 2025-26 season. Young was able to put together a more competitive team last season with a bigger NIL package, but the Hokies fell short of an NCAA Tournament berth when all was said and done.
Just how much more of a NIL package did the veteran coach get? Well, it certainly is big enough to compete with the top programs in the country, or even in the ACC, for that matter. CBS Sports dropped the roster values and sending tiers for the 2026-27 season, and for Young and Virginia Tech, it shows how far away from competing in the NIL world they are.
Matt Norlander and Isaac Trotter broke things down, and Virginia Tech is in the sixth tier, which the spending runs between $7.1-9.9 million. One notable school in the same tier is Purdue, which compounds the job Matt Painter does with limited resources.
Young was able to get some key retention this offseason, bringing back forward Amani Hansberry and Tyler Johnson, and guard Ben Hammond. He did lose Neoklis Avdalas and Jaden Schutt to the Transfer Portal. What this also shows is that Mike Young is a good coach, and better resources could be a game-changer, something that hopefully isn't too far away.
ACC gets linked to new bowl game

“The ACC is proud to participate in the inaugural TransPerfect San Juan Bowl this December,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips. “This new event will provide a memorable postseason experience for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans, while showcasing ACC football in one of college football’s most compelling destinations.''
