There have been some frustrating seasons for the Virginia Tech men's basketball team, but 2025-26 could end up taking the cake. In a season that started with so much promise following a strong start, the postseason schedule came to a crashing halt in conference play.
The Hokies lost three games at the buzzer in stunning fashion that in the end cost them a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They finished 19-13 after being bounced in the first round of the ACC Tournament in overtime by Wake Forest. As expected, changes happened, but veteran head coach Mike Young was able to get a ton of retention, and there is just as much hype going into the 2026-27 season, as there was last year. That isn't going lost on Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Jon Rothstein has a bold take on Mike Young and Virginia Tech in 2026-27
You can file this under "Here we go again.'' Rothstein picked a couple of sleepers in the ACC for the upcoming season, and he tabbed Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech as his two sleepers.
"I'm looking at Mike Young and Virginia Tech,'' said Rothstein. "Again, Virginia Tech was firmly on the bubble last season, (with) a slew of close losses all the time, but a respectable team last year. A team that played good basketball. Mike Young (is) one of the gentlemen and great people in our profession and an elite offensive coach. Now, the 76-team NCAA Tournament, I think there's enough in Blacksburg with two all-ACC-caliber players in Ben Hammond and Amani Hansberry for the Hokies to be one of the 76.''
We went down this road last year about this same time, and we all remember how it turned out. Some players exited through the portal, but Young did his best to retain three key players: Hansberry, Hammond, and Tyler Johnson. There are some veterans added through the portal that Young is excited about and who should be able to step in and help out right away.
Virginia Tech has less than a month to go before the season opens on Nov. 3 at Cassell Coliseum against Coppin State. After falling short last season in making the NCAA Tournament, if the Hokies are going to take advantage of the extended field, they will need to stay healthy and turn the close losses into wins in 2026-27.
