The Athletic released its college football coaching tiers, and they ranked James Franklin in the second tier, the established winners tier. That's surprising given how things ended last fall at Penn State, but where did some other ACC coaches fall? Mario Cristobal of Miami and Dabo Swinney of Clemson were also placed in Franklin's tier.
As for other conference coaches, in the third tier, "Consistency with upside" had Rhett Lashley of SMU and Jeff Brohm of Louisville, while in the fourth tier, "Usually solid" had Dave Doeren of North Carolina State, Manny Diaz of Duke, and Pat Narduzzi of Pittsburgh. In the fifth tier, "Up and down" was Fran Brown of Syracuse, Jake Dickert of Wake Forest, Tony Elliott of Virginia, Mike Norvell of Florida State, and Bill O'Brien of Boston College.
We'll see how things play out in 2026, but you can bet that there will be changes in 2027.
Men's basketball recruit sets visit date with Missouri
The Hokies men's basketball team will host Class of 2027 Top-40 prospect Tyran Frazier on Sept. 5 in Blacksburg. Getting a recruit like him on campus for a visit is big for Virginia Tech, but they will have their work cut out for them when it comes to other schools involved in his recruitment.
Sam Kayser reported on his X account that Frazier will visit Missouri on Sept. 19, and he is the 32nd-ranked player in his class, per SportsCenter NEXT 100. Currnely, the rising senior class is a work in progress for the the Hokies, although they do have key visits lined up this fall.
More Virginia Tech Hokies
- The Hokies women's soccer team will look for a third straight win to open the 2026 season on Thursday night at Thompson Field when they host Liberty in a non-conference match. Virginia Tech owns a 2-1 season-opening win over Old Dominion last week, then a 6-0 win over VMI on Sunday night at home.
- Not to be overlooked, the Hokies men's soccer team heads to Columbus, Ohio, for their season-opening match on Thursday at 8 p.m. against Ohio State. They will be facing a Buckeyes team looking for some revenge for a season-opening 1-0 loss last year in Blacksburg.
- Former Virginia Tech baseball standout, Kerry Carpenter, is on the 10-day injured list,
battling left foot plantar fasciitis. He is beginning to work out, but his return date is unknown, and he's been out since the end of July. The Tigers are currently hanging around the American League wild-card race, which has several teams battling for one spot.
