The Virginia Tech baseball team began the season winning six of its first seven games of the 2026 season. They swept William & Mary, beat East Tennessee State, and won 2-out-of-3 against Rutgers over the weekend. The Hokies are off to Arlington, Texas, this weekend for the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series with games against Texas A&M, Tennessee, and Mississippi State. All three SEC schools are ranked.
Before heading to Texas, the Hokies played their first road game of the season on Tuesday afternoon against James Madison. Virginia Tech held a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, and the Dukes closed the gap to 5-4 with two runs. In the bottom of the ninth, JMU had runners on second and third and were a base hit away from walking off the Hokies.
Virginia Tech first baseman Ethan Gibson dove to stab a ground ball ticketed for right field and was able to get up and beat the Dukes batter to first to end the game as the Hokies improved to 7-1. Pete Daniel delivered the game-winning run with a solo home run in the top of the sixth for the fifth Tech run of the game.
Softball rises in latest poll
To say that the Virginia Tech softball team is racking up early-season statement wins would be an understatement. The Hokies completed a perfect weekend in Georgia by winning two games over the Bulldogs to close out their stay in Athens after beating Seton Hall and Utah State. With those four wins, Tech moved to No. 11 in the Softball America and NFCA/GoRout polls. They climbed to No. 12 in the D1 softball and ESPN/USA Today Softball polls.
Another big weekend awaits Virginia Tech with a trip to Auburn. They will play two games against the Tigers and USC Upstate. They will also play one game against Troy.
Virginia QB suing the NCAA
What an addition to the Virginia football team, Chandler Morris was in 2025. The 25-year-old led the Cavaliers to the ACC Championship Game against Duke, in which UVA fell in overtime. Virginia went on to win the Gator Bowl over Missouri.
Just when you thought that a 25-year-old wouldn't try to come back for another season of college football, guess again. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Morris is suing the NCAA for a seventh year of eligibility. That's right, a seventh year of college football. If he wins, it'll be interesting to see where he plays in 2026. It likely won't be Charlottesville, as Tony Elliott has brought in Missouri transfer Beau Pribula and Eli Holstein from Pittsburgh from the portal. I mean, who really wants a seventh year of college football? The madness needs to stop. The NCAA needs to put its foot down sometime.
