When the Virginia Tech football team heads to College Park this weekend for their early-season battle with Maryland, it'll be a bit of a Homecoming of sorts for members of the Hokies staff.
Head coach James Franklin returns to where he was on a staff with current Maryland coach Mike Locklsey, so does former Terrapins quarterback Danny O'Brien, who is Franklin's quarterback coach at Virginia Tech. O'Brien threw for over 4,000 yards during his career at Maryland in 2010 and 2011.
“I’d be lying if going back to a stadium where I won and lost a lot of games doesn’t bring back memories,'' said O'Brien on Wednesday after a Hokies practice. "One of my best friends Torrey Smith is going to be there.”
This will be O'Brien's first trip to Virginia Tech after going there with Penn State. However, new school, same nerves will always pop up.
UNC coach Steve Belichick steps down
After a frustrating first season in Chapel Hill, veteran coach Bill Belichick was looking for a better Year 2 with North Carolina. Things have started well on the field, with UNS 2-0 after wins over TCU and East Tennessee State University. They will open conference play this weekend against Clemson.
However, on Aug. 6, Bill's defensive coordinator, Steve Belichick, was placed on medical leave, and on Thursday, it was announced that he had resigned from his position at UNC. GM Michael Lombardi also resigned earlier this summer, which opened some eyes. We'll see how this affects the Tar Heels, if at all, for the rest of the season.
Virginia Tech men's basketball extends offer to four-star 2028 forward
Recruiting in the Classes of 2027 and 2028 for college basketball is going to pick up, and according to Dushawn London of 247Sports, Mike Young and Virginia Tech have extended an offer to a fast-rising four-star forward in the Class of 2028. According to London, the Hokies have extended an offer to Kevin Wheatley, Jr. from Iowa. The 6-foot-6 sharpshooter also recently picked up an offer from Kansas, according to 247Sports. Mike Young loves wings who can get to the basket, but also can step outside and shoot the ball.
