Since arriving at Virginia Tech earlier this summer, new athletic director Brian White has hit the ground running. He has added some key pieces to the athletic front office, and that continued when he hired Mary Giardina.
She "will serve as a key member of Virginia Tech's executive leadership team, overseeing strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations while partnering closely with White to advance the department's priorities, strengthen organizational alignment and enhance the student-athlete experience," according to a school press release. She comes with an extensive background in college athletics, before coming to Blacksburg.
She held leadership roles with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke, West Virginia, and Florida Atlantic. This continues the rebuild of the athletic department that was long overdue and will be better for athletics as a whole moving forward.
Virginia Tech releases 2026 volleyball schedule
The 2026 Hokies volleyball season is over a month away, but they finally dropped their 2026 schedule that will begin in Blacksburg on the last weekend in August and won't include another home match until October. Here is the breakdown of the schedule.
Virginia Tech will open with the Hokie Invitational at home on Aug. 28 with a 10:30 a.m. match against Kent State. They will play William & Mary at 6:30 that night and then host Coppin State at 3 p.m. on Aug. 29. They will have home ACC matches against Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Louisville, SMU and Pittsburgh.
Virginia Tech will have away matches in the non-conference in the Winthrop Invitational against Winthrop and Old Dominion on Sept. 3 and 4. The following weekend, on Sept. 11 and 12, they will take part in the Northwestern Invitational against Northwestern and Wisconsin-Green Bay. They will also have non-conference road matches against Long Island and South Carolina.
The Hokies' road ACC matches are at Clemson, Stanford, California, Virginia, Boston College, Syracuse, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, and Duke.
Greg Sankey calls out Dabo Swinney
SEC commissioner joined SportTalk Mississippi at SEC Media Days and fired a shot at Clemson coach Dabo Swinney over his comments about tampering and calling out Ole Miss coach Pete Golding earlier this year.
"We. All. Live in a glass house,'' said Sankey.
"I respect that frustrations boil over from time to time, but the environment we're in -- representatives, NIL representatives, agents making phone calls -- we're in a very different environment, which puts us in the glass house, and so we all ought to be careful about throwing stones, including me.''
Let's face it, tampering is happening, and good luck policing it.
