When it was announced that Whit Babcock was retiring and there was going to be a need for a new athletic director, it sent some shockwaves through the Virginia Tech fanbase. There have been fans who have been waiting for the day to come when Babcock was going to retire.

Just like when the school fired Brent Pry as football coach in September, it was another case where the search committee in Blacksburg needed to nail the hire. Although it was a different search committee, it appears that the hire was a huge success.

Former Michigan men's basketball coach Dusty May has high praise for new Virginia Tech AD Brian White

Virginia Tech ended up hiring James Franklin as the next head football coach after he was fired from Penn State, but this time, he was part of the search committee to find the next AD. When the dust settled, the school hired Brian White from Florida Atlantic. Let's just say that he comes with high praise from one of his former coaches, Dusty May.

"There is no doubt that Brian White is one of the best and most well-respected leaders in college athletics. He made a profound impact on Florida Atlantic University that will be felt for generations, leading the department through a turbulent time in college athletics with a steady and strategic hand. I am confident that he will bring that same passion and vision to Virginia Tech. I am honored to call him both a friend and colleague and I couldn't be happier for him, his wife Paige and their beautiful family. It's a great day for the Hokies!,'' said May.

If there is someone who knows White well, it's May. It wasn't too long ago that White was the AD at FAU, and they went to the. Final Four under May. Following that run, it wasn't too long before big schools came after him, and he was hired at Michigan. He won the National Championship in April and is now off to the NBA to coach the Dallas Mavericks, but he's doing it with a ringing endorsement of White.

White comes from a family that has a long history in college athletics, but he is coming to Blacksburg at a pivotal time. The school is pumping more money and resources into athletics, and with Franklin on board, things are looking up. His track record at Vanderbilt and Penn State in turning both programs around speaks volumes enough. If White brings the same passion to Virginia Tech that he had at Florida Atlantic, then the sky's the limit in Blacksburg.
