After opening the 2025-26 season with a 100-56 win over Towson last Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team struggled in its second game of the season on Sunday afternoon against Loyola of Maryland.
The Hokies were never able to put the Greyhounds away until late in the fourth quarter in a 64-48 win. Virginia Tech played the game without Texas Tech transfer Kilah Freelon, and after the game, head coach Megan Duffy said she was day-to-day, according to David Cunningham of Tech Sideline.
Against Loyola, Carleigh Wenzel led Virginia Tech with 18 points and six rebounds, and Carys Baker had 17 points and six rebounds. Kayl Petersen had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Northwestern transfer Meg Daley chipped in with seven points and four rebounds. Samyha Suffren had eight points, and Mackenzie Nelson had 11 assists. The Hokies will host Gardner-Webb on Thursday night.
Football suffers de-commitment
The dominoes continue to fall from the firing of Brent Pry two months ago. It has been slow in some areas, but in terms of high school recruits, the Hokies lost a big one Sunday afternoon, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.
Class of 2027 edge Andrew Rogers gave his commitment to Virginia Tech in August, and on Sunday, Fawcett reported that Rogers told him he has de-committed from the Hokies. He was a sought-after recruit in the cycle with nearly 30 offers. He'll draw a lot of interest again, and you don't blame him for de-committing, with a lot of questions remaining around who the next coach in Blacksburg will be.
Volleyball swept by nationally ranked teams
In what has been another tough season for the Virginia Tech volleyball team, they had a brutally tough weekend against a pair of nationally ranked teams. On Friday night, they were swept by third-ranked Pittsburgh, 3-0, and then on Sunday afternoon, they also lost, 3-0, this time to 10th-ranked SMU. At 10-15 overall and 2-12 in the ACC, the Hokies will travel to Duke on Thursday night.
