Virginia Tech football's pivotal 2025 season predicted to get an early-season reality check

According to CBS Sports, the Hokies will drop the season opener, which should not come as a surprise.

Going into the 2025 season, it is widely known that the Virginia Tech football team is facing a big season for the future of the program and head coach Brent Pry. At this time last season, there was a lot of hype surrounding the Hokies, but this year is totally different.

With some major roster turnover and some turnover on the coaching staff, there are a lot more questions than answers facing Virginia Tech, and there is also a very difficult first two weeks facing them as well. They open the season against South Carolina in Atlanta on Aug. 31, then six nights later, they open the home portion of their schedule against Vanderbilt. Two SEC teams in six days is not an ideal way to begin any season.

CBS Sports predicts Virginia Tech's first football loss early in 2025

CBS Sports college football writer Brad Crawford predicted when each ACC football team would suffer their first setback of the 2025 season, and he has the Hokies losing early, really early, Week 1 early against South Carolina.

"The second SEC vs. ACC showdown in Georgia to start the season, Virginia Tech has an opportunity to do something the Hokies have not accomplished thus far under Brent Pry -- beat a top 25 opponent. The Gamecocks nearly reached the College Football Playoff last season with LaNorris Sellers at quarterback and Pry has called this one a barometer game of sorts for his program to see where it stacks up nationally. There's the Beamer family angle at play, too. Wonder where Frank's allegiance will lie?"

Let's be honest, this would be a huge win for the Hokies, but not many people are expecting a Virginia Tech win. A signature win is what it would be for Brent Pry at the helm of the Hokies in Year 4, but losing this game would not be surprising. The problem is not losing to Vanderbilt six nights later in what becomes an almost win early in 2025.
