Virginia Tech Football: When the Duke’s Mayo Bowl is the Goal, There’s a Problem
By Roy Hatfield
The house is currently on fire. Nobody cares, and there is no leadership at the top. Honest admission, I love Brent Pry. I love his attitude. I am enamored with his coach speak. I love his honest admissions to repeated failures. He has had a ready excuse for every shortcoming the Hokies have faced for the past three years. Three years in and we are staying to the finish.
He’s a “Blacksburg Guy”, but the wins and losses aren’t adding up. He loves the Allman Brothers, preaches defense, and loves the town, but we CAN’T WIN. The Vanderbilt game (the opening game) tells the tale. We never got off the bus, then the defense got gashed to the point of disrepair. Sound familiar? For a defensive coach to give up that many explosive plays is not only irresponsible, it’s disingenuous. As someone who covers the athletic department, particularly football, this is a joke.
I refused to give the Hokie Club any money. I refused to give the NIL collectives any money. He can’t coach. He has a full cycle under his belt and we can’t compete. With Old Dominion. With Duke. Look at his record. This is one of the worst defenses in Hokie history. I’m embarrassed for him. I will no longer support a bad coach and go to these butt-whuppings. Beat somebody and then we can chat. Compete for a title and then we can chat. Even under Justin Fuente, at least the Hokies had hope. Now, all we have is a complete and total dumpster fire,
What is most important to me are wins and losses. We are embarrassed and have lost all that Frank Beamer fought tooth and nail for. We are an afterthought. We will never (under the current trajectory) compete for a conference championship. Liberty has all the MOJO in the state. We can’t get any worse. But wait….there’s more: If we can’t win one more ballgame, we won’t even go to a bowl. That’s the new normal in Blacksburg, That’s the standard? Lose an embarrassing game and give an emotional press conference. Sad. But. True.
