On3 recently ranked the Virginia Tech football team as having the second-best winter transfer portal in the ACC and 14th overall nationally. Every player that head coach Brent Pry gets in the portal is big for the 2025 season as the Hokies will have a different-looking roster next fall.

Both sides of the ball need additions and over the last month, Virginia Tech has been getting commitments that add depth along the defensive line. That motto continued Thursday night with another commitment, this time from an edge.

Texas State edge Ben Bell commits to Virginia Tech

Over the last couple of seasons, one of the more underrated programs in the state of Texas has been Texas State. Thursday night, the Hokies picked up a commitment from Ben Bell, a three-star edge from Cedar Park, Texas.

This past season for Texas State, Bell had 13 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound began his career at Louisana Tech for two seasons before spending the last three with the Bobcats. Aside from Virginia Tech, he also held offers from Kansas, Baylor, Minnesota, Wake Forest, and Ole Miss.

Bell adds more depth along the defensive line from the portal. Before Bell, Virginia Tech had commitments from Jahzari Priester of Hampton, Arias Nash of Mercer, and James Djonkman of Eastern Michigan.

Pry still has yet to name a defensive coordinator and with each day that passes by, you wonder what the hold-up is. It wouldn't be surprising that the guy he wants is Anthony Poindexter from Penn State, but with James Franklin's DC Tom Allen leaving to take the same position at Clemson for Dabo Swinney. That leaves Poindexter as one of the top choices for Franklin. You get the feeling that the next DC in Blacksburg won't be hired until Penn State names there.
