One year after nearly any transfer portal departures from Blacksburg along with a few key additions, this winter portal window has been active for the Virginia Tech football team. Brent Pry has currently seen 25 players exit via the portal with 17 coming in so far.
Add in players leaving for the NFL Draft and the 2025 Hokies are going to have a different look to them. Transfer portal-wise, Pry and his staff have done a nice job bringing in talent that is going to step in and contribute right away. One industry is very high on what has happened over the last month with Virginia Tech’s roster.
Virginia Tech ranks 2nd in on3 transfer portal rankings
On3 released their transfer portal rankings for the ACC and they have the Hokies second behind Miami. On top of that, they have Virginia Tech ranked 14th in the country, which is somewhat of a surprise. Here is how they base their rankings,
"On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window."
What this tells us is what we already know, Brent Pry has had a lot of success in the transfer portal. He also does a very good job of bringing Virginia players home from other out-of-state programs to play in Blacksburg.
However, for as much success as he has had off the field, he continues to struggle on the field, which opens the door for a huge 2025 season in terms of his future at Virginia Tech. Loading up for next season is a must and Pry is trying to do that, now it’s just a matter of seeing the same success on the field for 12 weeks as we have seen in the off-season.
