Virginia Tech football's success in 2025 hinges on this record through Week 4

If the Hokies are going to turn things around in 2025, they must have this record after their four non-conference games.

Going into the 2025 season, there are a lot of eyes on the Virginia Tech football team. After a second straight 6-6 campaign in 2024 with a lot of expectations entering the season, the Hokies are entering a new season with a lot of roster turnover and coaching staff turnover.

Some will say that Pry is entering a season where his job might be on the line if things don't line up and go a certain way, but I tend to think that unless things bottom out, it would take a lot to go wrong for him to lose his job. This season, the Hokies will open the season with their four non-conference games, and two of them are SEC teams, and two teams are not from power conferences.

Just how this season will end, Thanksgiving Weekend in Charlottesville after the Commonwealth Cup with Virginia, is anyone's guess, honestly. However, if the Hokies are going to have a successful season and be better than a lot of people think, they must have a certain record following Week 4.

Virginia Tech must be 3-1 after Week 4 to have momentum going into ACC schedule

If the Hokies are going to get to at least six wins, if not more, then a 3-1 record after their four non-conference games is a must. Honestly, if they aren't 3-1, then there should be some cause for concern. Losing against South Carolina in Week 1 is a likely outcome, but the next three games, all at Lane Stadium, should be wins.

Vanderbilt comes to town in Week 2 with quarterback Diego Pavia back and running his mouth already. Vandy's magical season by their standards began with an overtime win over the Hokies last fall in Nashville, and there should be no reason why Tech shouldn't be up for the game.

Then, after two SEC teams in the first two weeks, Virginia Tech gets Old Dominion and Wofford at home, and both of those should be wins. After that, the eight-game ACC slate begins at North Carolina State, and the month of November is a gauntlet for Pry's team. The tougher ACC slate is a reason why 3-1 through Week 4 is a must.
