It's hard to believe, but the first Virginia Tech spring practices under James Franklin are in the books. Now, we wait until the summer when the team will gather in August for fall camp, with the season-opener Labor Day Weekend when VMI visits Blacksburg.

There were some questions answered and some, well, not so much this spring. Now that the dust has settled, let's dive into the Virginia Tech post-spring practices depth chart.

Virginia Tech offensive depth chart

Quarterback

Ethan Grunkemeyer

Bryce Baker

Kelden Ryan

Troy Huhn

There are no real surprises here. Grunkemeyer, a Penn State transfer, was the leader in the clubhouse going into practices and the game, regardless of what Franklin tried to say about a competition. Baker is someone who impressed after coming over from North Carolina and is a very capable backup.

Running Backs

Marcellous Hawkins

Jeffrey Overton, Jr.

Bill Davis

Tyler Mason

Hawkins was dealing with an injury, which limited his spring touches, and he didn't play in the spring game. However, if he's healthy when the fall rolls around, he'll likely be the RB1, but don't overlook Overton Jr. He was explosive last season when he was finally healthy at the end of the year. Overton, Jr. will be battling Davis and Mason for carries, but the depth here might be a little deeper than we originally thought.

Wide Receivers

Ayden Greene

Que'Sean Brown

Tyseer Denmark

Takye Heath

Chanz Wiggins

Marlion Jackson

Franklin getting Greene to return was huge, and Brown is going to be a big weapon for Grunkemeyer and offensive coordinator Ty Howle in the offense. A big playmaker who could end up being one of the better portal additions. Heath has explosive speed, and Wiggins is the player that I will keep an eye on in the fall. He could be an X-factor for Howle.

Tight Ends

Luke Reynolds

Benji Gosnell

Ja'Ricous Hairston

Reynolds is going to be a stud at Virginia Tech, and the Penn State transfer sky rockets up to the top of the depth chart. He has a bright future on Saturdays and then Sundays at the next level. Gosnell has been the Hokies' top option at the position when it was used. Don't overlook Hairston after the season he had in 2025. This is going to be a sneaky-good position grouping.

Offensive Line

Aidan Lynch

Montavious Cunningham

Kyle Altuner

Logan Howard

Layth Ghannam

Benjamin Eziuka

Michael Troutman

Brody Meadows

Johnny Garrett

Justin Terry

Matt Moore is building some solid depth along the offensive line from where things ended last season. There are still going to be answers that need to be figured out in the fall, but there is nowhere to go but up for this group. It's safe to say that they are going to be deeper and be able to deal with injuries that occur over the course of a season.

Virginia Tech defensive depth chart

Defensive Line

Aycen Stevens

Elhadj Fall

Kemari Copeland

Javion Hilson

Eric Menash

Randy Adirika

Jason Abbey

Mylachi Williams

When it comes to figuring things out for the opener, like the offensive line, the defensive line will have questions answered in camp. First-year coach Sean Spencer has some returning talent to work with, and this group should be able to get after the quarterbacks next season.

Linebackers

Noah Chambers

Kaleb Spencer

Keon White

Antwone Santiago

Yes, losing Caleb Woodson to Alabama in the portal is a big loss, but there is still a lot to like about this position for defensive coordinator Brent Pry. Spencer is someone who has been very good since coming over from Miami and is due for a huge season with more playing time. This group should be well-seasoned when the season rolls around.

Cornerbacks

Isaiah Brown-Murray

Joshua Clarke

Jaquez White

Cam Chadwick

Kenny Woseley

Thomas Williams

Safeties

Tyson Flowers

Quentin Reddish

Sheldon Robinson

Jordan Bass

Brennan Johnson

It appears that the Hokies avoided complete disaster with an injury to White during the spring game. It would have been a huge blow if they lost the Troy transfer for any part of the fall. Brown-Murray is the seasoned veteran back there, while UConn transfer Cam Chadwick is someone who should contribute a lot. As for the safeties, this group has plenty of experience and is interchangeable.
