When James Franklin was hired at Virginia Tech, you knew that sooner or later, he was going to make an impact when it came to high school recruiting. He hit the ground running after he was hired in November by flipping some Penn State commits he had before he was hired to Blacksburg.
Franklin finally put together a staff that included several new hires from outside of the program. Two of the new hires have joined Franklin and are helping him build a Top 15 recruiting Class of 2027, as the Hokies have secured 13 commitments so far. There are likely going to be more on the way.
As much as Franklin is heavily involved in the recruiting, a lot of the position coaches have had a say as well. Recruiting is changing, and Virginia Tech is seeing the fruits of its labors paying off, thanks to two new coaches on the staff.
Two Virginia Tech assistant coaches soaring in recruiting
Maybe one of the most underrated hires for Franklin was defensive line coach Sean Spencer from Texas A&M. He already has locked up four commitments in the Class of 2027: Brock Frisby, Xavier Perkins, Alexander Taylor, and Joseph Buchanan. What has been key in recruiting for Spencer is that three of the four are from the DMV, an area the Hokies must dominate recruiting under Franklin.
Spencer is ranked fourth in the ACC in recruiting and 11th nationally, according to 247Sports. Not to be outdone, another first-year Virginia Tech assistant coach, Norval McKenzie, the Hokies' running backs coach, is in the Top 5 in the ACC, coming in at No. 5 in recruiting and 20th nationally.
Replacing Elijah Brooks, who went to South Florida for the same position, McKenzie has hit the ground running at Tech, with his latest commit being Javian Jones-Priest from Texas last week. The month of April was a big month for McKenzie recruiting-wise when he got commitments from Kelvin Morrison from Pennsylavania and Stanley Smart from Georgia. Everything is coming up, James Franklin at Virginia Tech in recruiting.
