When the college football transfer portal window opened in the winter, Virginia Tech saw some key players enter rather than test the NFL Draft or return to Blacksburg. What a difference a year makes in terms of retention. One year after getting a slew of retention, head coach Brent Pry saw several players bolt the program.
To make up for some of the losses, Pry and his staff had some work to do in the portal. Replacing Mansoor Delane, Moses Phillips, and Braelin Moore, just to name a few, was not going to be easy. Not only did Pry have to deal with players leaving, but also coaches, three he fired and former offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, who left to become the offensive line coach at Ohio State in February.
Entering what is a huge season in 2025 for Pry, the work done in the transfer portal has been successful to On3 and they have finished higher in the rankings in the ACC as yo may think.
Virginia Tech football transfer portal grade from On3 is stunningly high
Work needed to be done in the portal, and according to On3, Pry and his staff did their work. They have Virginia Tech with the fourth highest transfer portal grade, coming in only behind Miami, SMU and North Carolina. The Hokies have 24 transfers come into the program, with four of them being four-stars.
Right behind Virginia Tech is Virginia, which has coach Tony Elliott in the same boat entering the season as Pry with what is likely a make-or-break campaign.
There is still more work to be done by Pry, as a quarterback with experience is necessary, with Kyron Drones and Pop Watson dealing with injuries, and Drones having an injury history already. This is shaping up to be a successful portal season for Pry; now, the results need to come on the field.
