Virginia Tech Football: Predicting Hokies Final Two Games in Disappointing 2024 Season
By Scott Roche
It’s odd, but the Virginia Tech football team is on their second bye week of the 2024 season, something you never see. Sitting at 5-5 with injuries to key players, things are not going the way fans expected when the season began. Needing one win to become bowl-eligible, the Hokies will have cracks at it to extend their season by a couple of weeks.
The first of two games begins on Nov. 23 when they travel to Durham, N.C. to face a 7-3 Duke team in a primetime kick-off. Who is going to be able to play for head coach Brent Pry remains to be seen, but that won’t stop us from predicting their final two games.
Nov. 23: at Duke
The Blue Devils are a tough team to try and read. Texas transfer QB Malik Murphy has had a good season and Manny Diaz already has his team bowl-eligible with two games remaining. As for the Hokies, this will come down to who plays and just how healthy they are, something that Kyronn Drones and Bhayshul Tuten were not against Clemson.
Despite the Blue Devils having seven wins, on paper, Virginia Tech has more talent on both sides of the ball, but games are not decided on paper. My gut says the Hokies will come up big on the road, however, until they can beat a team with a winning record on the road, it’s hard picking them.
Prediction: Duke 24, Virginia Tech 20
Record: 5-6 (3-4)
Nov. 30: vs. Virginia
We are so getting both teams coming into the game at 5-6, looking to become bowl-eligible, aren’t we? It just feels like it is destined to happen. The Cavaliers have Notre Dame this weekend before hosting SMU on Nov. 23. What a Saturday in Blacksburg that would be.
Virginia Tech has underachieved this season, there’s no doubt about it, but a loss to Virginia at home would be icing on the cake for 2024. Like Duke, on paper, the Hokies are a better team and should be motivated to win this game, even if they likely are decimated by opt-outs in a potential bowl game.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 34, Virginia 24
Record: 6-6 (4-4)
It’s very hard envisioning this Virginia Tech team, gushed with all kinds of hype going into the season, missing out on a bowl game. It’s possible, but again, it’s hard to envision and they find a way to get at least one win.
