Virginia Tech football path to reaching season goal still within reach
By Scott Roche
At ACC media days in July, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry said he would be disappointed if the Hokies were not in Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game in early December. Then after dropping their first conference games at Miami two weeks ago, the chances slipped even further. However, after last weekend’s 31-7 win at Stanford, the chance is still very much alive.
This weekend the Hokies will have a bye before returning to Lane Stadium Thursday night to host Boston College. There are several obstacles standing between the Hokies and Charlotte, but one college football writer laid out Virginia Tech’s path.
Virginia Tech football’s path to ACC title game laid out
Manny Navarro of The Athletic laid out the Hokies path to Charlotte and while it’s not easy, it’s doable. It begins with BC and their final six ACC games, but as Navarro pointed out, there’s a chance.
“The Hokies’ season-opening overtime loss at Vanderbilt doesn’t look so ugly anymore now does it? More importantly, Brent Pry’s team put its heartbreaking loss at Miami well behind it with a blowout win at Stanford last week. Can the Hokies make it to Charlotte? Not if Miami, SMU or Pittsburgh run the table. All six remaining opponents for the Hokies (Boston College, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Clemson, Duke and Virginia) are teams they can leapfrog in the conference standings.”
The path is certainly there for Virginia Tech, but if they control what they can control, then they are going to help along the way, a lot of help actually, to get to Charlotte. It starts with them taking care of business on their end and everything falling into place. Is it a long shot? Yes, absouetly, however, after everything that has happened this year, there is a way and that’s all the Hokies can ask for at this point.
