Now that the calendar has turned to April, we are just 17 days away from Virginia Tech's first spring game under new coach James Franklin and his staff. The game will be played on April 18 at 3 p.m EST at Lane Stadium, and a big crowd is expected.
It will also be a big recruiting weekend, and expect Franklin to go all out in welcoming some of the recruits who will be on a visit. He is asking to sell out Lane Stadium for the game, and would it be surprising if it were? No.
There are a lot of new players on the roster for the 2026 season, from the Transfer Portal to the Class of 2027 players who have signed. It should be an interesting mixture of players that are fighting for starting spots, not only this spring, but also when practices begin over the summer.
NFL Draft less than a month away
Don't look now, but the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh is less than a month away. Last year, it was a busy draft for Virginia Tech players, and this year is expected to be a little quieter. However, there is a chance that someone hears their name called over the weekend.
Last week, there were a handful of Virginia Tech players who took part in Pro Day in Blacksburg. The list was headlined by quarterback Kyron Drones and running back Terion Stewart. All in all, 11 players took part, and none were invited to the NFL combine.
Quiet time coming following spring game
In previous seasons, shortly after the spring games in April, a spring Transfer Portal would open, and there would be some movement before school got out for the summer. However, that is not the case this year as the NCAA eliminated the spring window and went with the one in January.
We'll see how that comes into play in terms of injuries and players not happy with their outlook after spring practices. Truthfully, the one portal window for football comes at the right time, and there was no need for a second one in the spring.
