As we turn the calendar to May, we head into June, which is a huge month for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and his staff in terms of recruiting. Visits, commitments, you name it, recruiting wars are going to pick up. With that said, let's take a look back at May and look at some of the big stories over the last 31 days.

Kyron Drones on pace for camp this summer

In an interview with Tim Thomas of The Tech Lunch Pail, Pry said that quarterback Kyron Drones' recovery is right on schedule to be fully cleared by mid-June. Drones had his spring practice cut short by a week when it was announced that he would undergo a medical procedure.

This is refreshing news that the Hokies' top signal caller is close to being cleared, and he is looking to have a huge bounce-back 2025 season after last season was cut short with injuries. Pop Watson is also back, and Oklahoma State transfer Garrett Rangel will push Watson in camp for the QB2 spot, but keeping Drones healthy is key for Virginia Tech's season.

Virginia Tech lands former 4-star QB Garret Rangel

Speaking of Rangel, when Drones had his spring cut short and Watson was ruled out of the Spring Game with an injury that didn't make sense to play him, that started to rasie of red flags. To compound matters, Davi Belfort entered the spring portal meaning adding a portal Qb was a must.

Rangel comes to Blacksburg as a former four-star quarterback who threw for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns for the Cowboys. Last season, the Hokies added Collin Schlee from UCLA in the spring portal window, and we saw how important he became over the last month of the season. This could end up being a sneaky good addition.

Under the lights in Lane Stadium

After opening the season against South Carolina in Atlanta on Aug. 31, the Hokies will return home for three games in a row and the start times for two of those games were announced, along with a third in October. All three will be played under the lights inside Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech will host Vanderbilt on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in what is going to be a huge matchup as the Hokies look for revenge for the season-opening loss in Nashville last season. One week later, they will host Old Dominion at 7 p.m., then on Oct. 24, they will host California at 7:30 in a Friday night battle in Blacksburg. Nothing better than football under the lights at Lane Stadium.
