After two routs at home over VMI and Old Dominion, the Virginia Tech football team hit the road for their first test away from Blacksburg on Saturday in College Park against Maryland. The Hokies raced out to a 35-14 lead in the fourth quarter before running out the clock in a 35-26 victory. At 3-0, Virginia Tech will open ACC play this weekend at Boston College.
Not all the news was great, as first-year head coach James Franklin lost a pair of players on the offensive side of the ball to injuries: offensive linemen Justin Terry and wide receiver Ayden Greene. At his weekly press conference on Monday, Franklin didn't have an update other than Greene being a game-time decision at BC, and he needed to talk to Terry; he should have a clearer update after Wednesday's practice. In Terry's place, Logan Howland came in and did a nice job.
ACC honors Virginia Tech OC Ty Howle
Through three quarters, the Hokies' offense was a well-oil machine against the Terrapins. They put up 35 points and racked up 445 yards when the game ended. They had a key drive in the final five minutes after Maryland cut the deficit to 35-26 where they ran out the clock and converted a pair of fourth downs.
On Monday, Howle was named the CBS Sports ACC Coordinator of the Week after his unit's performance. Ethan Grunkmeyer threw for over 300 yards, and tight end Luke Reynolds had over 100 yards receiving. Grunkmeyer was named the Davey O'Brien Great 8 winner for Week 3 after throwing for 314 yards on 31 completions, three passing touchdowns, and one on the ground.
Kemari Copeland explains difference between 2025 to 2026
Some members of the Hokies who suffered through a dreadful 3-9 season last fall and decided to stick around through the coaching change are enjoying their time so far in 2026. One of those players is star defensive lineman Kemari Copeland, who explained the difference between last fall and the first three games of this season.
"I can say we feel a lot better; last year, the games were close,'' said Copeland, per Sons of Saturday Virginia Tech. "This year we got Franklin, and we got a dub. I'm just excited our teammates are doing a good job and obviously excited we got the dub.''

Miami suffers key season-ending injuries
Miami is the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC this season, and if they don't, it would be very surprising. That's why everyone loves college football. The Hurricanes picked up a win last Friday night at Wake Forest. On Monday morning, head coach Mario Cristobal confirmed two season-ending injuries they suffered to running back Charmar Brown and wide receiver Josh Moore. Tough blow for the conference's best team.
