Virginia Tech football is in their second bye week of the 2024 this season. If there was a time for it come, it was this week. Injuries are building on both sides of the ball and sitting a 5-5, the Hokies need a re-set before trying to win at least one of their final two games to become bowl-eligible. Wednesday, head coach Brent Pry gave an injury update on a freshman and that's where we'll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Football News.

Brent Pry gives Gabe Williams update

In the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 24-14 loss to Clemson at home, Star linebacker Gabe Williams suffered an injury and was down on the field for a long time. An ambulance was brought onto the field to transport him to a local hospital. Pry said that the injury would require surgery, but that it would be delayed.

It's being delayed as Williams' father suffered a medical situation after his injury, Gabe posted on social media on Wednesday. Prayers to both Gabe and his father for a successful recovery.

J.C. Price praises Antwaun Powell-Ryland

Wednesday, it was announced that Edge Antwaun Powell-Ryland was named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He is tied for the lead in the country in sacks with 13. Associate Head Coach and Defensive Line Coach J.C. Price had high praise for the University of Florida transfer.

"He (Antwaun Powell-Ryland) is the best defensive player in the country,'' Price said.

This season, Powell-Ryland has a pair of four-sack games against Old Dominion and Boston College. He did it with former Hokie legend Bruce Smith in attendance. No doubt Powell-Ryland will be playing on Sunday's in the future.

BC quarterback to enter transfer portal

Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos will enter the transfer portal after he was informed earlier this week by first-year coach Bill O'Brien that he was being benched. It marked the fifth QB this season that the Hokies have beaten who has either been benched or was injured when they played Tech.
