Tuesday, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry discussed a number of topics leading into this weekend’s pivotal matchup with Virginia at Lane Stadium. One of the topics he touched on was the transfer portal and coaching changes at other schools and that’s where we’ll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.

Brent Pry discusses transfer portal and coaching changes

Hours after it was learned that North Carolina was parting ways with Mack Brown, Pry met with the media and discussed the transfer portal and coaching changes. He mentioned that coaching changes at other schools can create chances to target kids at other schools.

For the last two seasons, Pry and his staff have been very aggressive in the transfer portal and that shouldn’t change. There are going to be current players on his roster that will enter the portal as that is the state of college football. Things could get interesting as early as next week.

Virginia Tech’s pass defense is a concern

The Hokies pass defense ranks 123rd in the country, which is not too surprising. For as good of a defensive line as they have, the secondary has been burnt way too many times in 2024. They have allowed a staggering 12 plays of 40-plus yards, including the first two Duke touchdowns this past weekend.

"For a group that generates a pretty good pass rush, we should be better there,’’ said Pry.

As with everything else this time of year, there are several reasons for the struggles the secondary has had, but he is correct that they should be better there, a lot better there.

Bhayshul Tuten sounds like a go on Saturday

Running back Bhayshul Tuten ran very well against Duke and looked like someone was healing from an ankle injury suffered on Oct. 26 in the final minutes against Georgia Tech. He rushed for 84 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown against the Blue Devils.

“I’ve got time to rest after the season,’’ Tuten said.

That sounds like someone who will be ready to go against Virginia and the Hokies will need him, no matter who is under center. Tuten has had some huge performances this season at Lane Stadium and the Hokies will need one more from him against Virginia.
