We are still 13 days away from Virginia Tech playing in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota on Jan. 3, but it has still been a busy week in Blacksburg in terms of news. The transfer portal has been busy and players announcing that they are returning for 2025. That's where we'll start this edition of Virginia Tech Football News.
LB Caleb Woodson returning for 2025
On Friday night, wide receiver Ayden Greene announced that he's returning to the Hokies for next season, and on Saturday, Brent Pry got a key player on defense announcing he's returning in linebacker Caleb Woodson.
Woodson was one of the Hokies' better linebackers this season in what was a breakout season for the Haymarket native. He had 67 tackles, two sacks, and an interception against Duke in Week 13. He will be a junior in 2025 and has racked up 89 tackles the last season for Virginia Tech.
Dorian Strong headed to NFL Draft
In a not-so-surprising decision, cornerback Dorian Strong announced on his X account that he's headed to the NFL Draft, closing the book on an incredible career in Blacksburg. This season, he had 32 tackles, 20 solo, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two interceptions.
Virginia Tech loses analyst
The Hokies are losing Director of High School Relations and Senior Offensive Analyst Gunter Brewer who is returning to some old roots at Marshall as the Thundering Hurd's Tight Ends Coach, per Football Scoop. In his previous stop with Marshall from 1996-99 where he mentored Randy Moss.
Virginia Tech edge enters portal
Virginia Tech defensive end C.J. McCray is the latest Hokies player to enter the transfer portal. The redshirt senior from Charlotte has one year of eligibility remaining wherever he lands for the 2025 season with a new school.
