It certainly has been an eventful week in Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech football team. On Monday, the transfer portal officially opened and there were some surprising players that entered, head coach Brent Pry fired three assistant coaches, and a number of players opted out of the bowl game next month. That's where we'll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Football News.

Brent Pry confirms bowl opt-outs

The biggest positive news this week for the Hokies was when Pry announced that quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson both are coming back for 2025. Drones had visions of entering the NFL Draft after this season, but after an up-and-down season combined with injuries, he's coming back for another season.

Pry did say that it's unlikely Drones plays in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota in Charlotte, while Da'Quan Felton, Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and Aeneas Peebles, all who declared for the NFL Draft in April, will not play in the game, which is not surprising. In terms of Bhayshul Tuten and Dorian Strong, they still have a decision to make to wear the Tech uniform or not one more time against the Golden Gophers.

Brent Pry bringing back Bud Foster

After news broke Thursday night that Pry was firing three coaches including defensive coordinator Chris Marve, it was going to be interesting to see who takes over calling the defense against Minnesota. Pry said the Shawn Quinn will handle those duties and he'll have some advice from a familiar name advising him.

Former defensive coordinator Bud Foster, a coaching legend in Blacksburg will advise both Quinn and Pry ahead of the Duke's Mayo Bowl. There is not a better person to come in and lend his expertise over the next couple of weeks in terms of game planning, practice, and just overall picking of his brain by the two Hokies' current coaches. This is great news.

Brent Pry names new position for bowl game

Along with Marve, Pry also let go of offensive line coach Ron Crook, and senior director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt IV on Thursday night. For the bowl game, Pry said that along with Quinn moving to defensive coordinator, Xavier Adibi is going to coach the inside linebackers, Brent Davis will coach the offensive line and Jarrett Ferguson will be the strength coach. As for firing Galt Pry said,

"I don't think that we were a team that was conditioned well enough to start the year and to finish games. We have to be mentally, physically tougher.''
