Last season, things turned around for the Virginia Tech football team once ACC play started after going 1-3 in their four non-conference games. This season, the Hokies went a disappointing 2-2 in their four non-conference games and have split their first two conference games.

After their bye last season, Virginia Tech came out and rolled over Syracuse at home starting a run to becoming bowl-eligible at 6-6, then finished off the season strong with a Military Bowl win over Tulane. Now, they are hoping to repeat their post-bye success beginning Thursday night against Boston College.

Virginia Tech hoping to have more post-bye week success

Last season, the Hokies played nearly as perfect of a game as they could against Syracuse on a Thursday night at Lane Stadium. They made big plays down the field, they ran the ball effectively, and they got after the Orange defensively. It all added up to a 38-10 win that jump-started a promising finish to the season.

This season, the Hokies will get two byes, with the second coming next month after a No. 9 home game against Clemson. Boston College is this year’s Thursday night, post-bye week opponent in Blacksburg. It will not be an easy game, but one that will certainly test Virginia Tech after a bye week to begin the second half of the season.

One major difference this season compared to last season for Brent Pry and his team is that they get four of their final six games at home. Georgia Tech follows next week and the opportunity is there for the Hokies to begin the second half on a good note. The 12-team College Football Playoff is a long shot at best, they’ll need to win the ACC Championship to get the automatic bid, but getting to bowl eligibility would be just as big this season as it was last season. Having more post-bye week success would go a long way to achieving that.
