On Thursday, the Virginia Tech football team lost their second big commitment in the Class of 2026 when Carnell Warren from South Carolina de-committed after committing back in January. Last June, the Hokies got a commitment from four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone, but in November, he de-committed and reopened his recruitment before committing to Penn State.
Warren's loss left the Hokies with just two commits in the rising senior class, linebacker Joshua Pittman and kicker Will Love. Two commits are the lowest in the ACC, and the next closest is Wake Forest with six commitments. On Friday, Virginia Tech and head coach Brent Pry picked up another commitment, and this one is another in-state commitment.
Virginia Tech football game commitment from edge Kamren Johnson
There has been a growing pipeline from Green Run High School in Virginia Beach to Blacksburg, and that pipeline continued on Friday when three-star edge Kamren Johnson committed to the Hokies. According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Johnson is the 31st-ranked player in the Commonwealth, with J.C. Price and Shawn Quinn leading his recruiting from Tech.
Johnson picked Virginia Tech over Virginia and Pittsburgh, which is a huge in-state win over the Cavaliers and a big ACC win over Pittsburgh. Johnson took his visit recently to Blacksburg, where he was able to connect with former Green Run teammates Keylen Adams (wide receiver), Knahlij Harrell (cornerback), and Zeke Chinwike (defensive lineman).
This is the first of two commitments the Hokies hope to land this weekend, as three-star Kamdon Gillespie, a defensive lineman from Mooresville, North Carolina, is scheduled to make his announcement on Saturday afternoon between Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. Things are kind of wobbly right now in terms of recruiting for the Hokies, but this is one of what they hope will be a pair of commitments on the second full weekend of June.
