Virginia Tech Football: Another Week Another Colossal Test for the Hokies

Here we go again. Virginia Tech has another “must-win” game on Saturday. The Hokies will invade Syracuse, N.Y. to try and become bowl-eligible.

The Virginia Hokies are on a heater. For the first time under head coach Brent Pry, the Hokies have won 3 straight football games. Even though the win against Georgia Tech was ugly at times, it was still a win. By defeating the Yellow Jackets, the Hokies managed to keep the momentum they had worked so hard for. Imagine heading to the dome with a 4-4 mark.

There would not be a ton of confidence in the Hokies pulling off a road victory. Syracuse enters the tilt with a 5-2 overall record but has two conference losses. Virginia Tech’s only blemish is the infamous game down in Miami. How big does that call look now if you are at Virginia Tech? This game will eliminate the loser from A.C.C. Championship contention. If Virginia Tech somehow manages a victory, the faint heartbeat of the Hokies’ chances still remains.

This season the Orange are 3-1 at home, while the Hokies are 2-2 on the road. I’m not ready to say that Syracuse has a huge home-field advantage, but I will say they have a unique home field. I’ve seen the dome rocking and claustrophobic, and I’ve seen it benign and almost quiet.

Generally speaking, the ‘Cuse shows up to the Hokies. Some of the Big East contests held there were some of my favorite games. Good and bad, the dome has some stories to tell. As I outlined in a previous article, this contest should come down to a quarterback battle. It’s Baylor transfer Kyron Drones vs. Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord, and I’m going to side with Drones in this contest.

Final Score: Virginia Tech 27, Syracuse 24
