After a quiet first couple of weeks in terms of transfer portal commits, things have picked up in a hurry for Virginia Tech. After losing nearly two dozen players to the portal themselves and with a roster that sees a number of players use up their eligibility, head coach Brent Pry has a lot of work to do within the portal.
Over the last 10 days, Virginia Tech has received nine commitments with a lot of the work being done in the secondary, a big position of need because of the transfer portal additions. Despite nine additions, there are still two areas of need that Pry must address through the portal.
Virginia Tech needs wide receivers and offensive linemen through the portal
There are two positions of big needs through the portal and those are wide receivers and offensive linemen. Pry fired three coaches a couple of weeks ago, including offensive line coach Ron Crook. West Virginia OL coach Matt Moore was hired as offensive line coach and he is left with the task of rebuilding a line that has been hit by graduation and the portal.
He picked up his first commitment on Thursday when Tomas Rimac committed from West Virginia and he's a good one for his final year of eligibility. There are other Mountaineers in the portal that could follow Moore to Blacksburg and whether it's a former player from West Virginia or anywhere else, experienced players are a priority.
Wide receiver is another position that needs help as four players, Ali Jennings, Stephen Gosnell, Jaylin Lane, and Da'Quan Felton have used up their eligibility. There are some good younger receivers left. Ayden Greene is one of the more experienced ones and there is a couple of freshmen who should get some snaps in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota on Jan. 3. However, with the talent lost on the outside, it's clear that it is another need through the portal.
There are other needs for the Hokies, a running back and another linebacker would be nice additions, and even some defensive linemen. It's been a good start for Pry through the portal to date, but there are still needs that have to be addressed going forward.
