Virginia Tech Football 2025 Season-Opener Against South Carolina Will Be in Primetime
By Scott Roche
We just finished up the 2024 regular season for college football and this upcoming weekend, it's hard to believe that bowl season begins. Things will really ramp up next weekend when the new 12-team College Football Playoff starts on Friday night, Dec. 20, and concludes on Saturday, Dec. 21 with three games.
As far as Virginia Tech goes after beating Virginia, 37-17, on Nov. 30 to become bowl-eligible, they will have to wait until Jan. 3 to play Minnesota out of the Big Ten in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. With all the players that have entered the transfer portal and declared for the NFL Draft, there is no telling what the roster will look like for Brent Pry and his team in Charlotte.
Before bowl season kicks off and the College Football Playoff begins, the SEC announced their 2025 football schedules Wednesday night. While times were not set for a lot of the games, dates were confirmed and one of the schedules released confirmed Virginia Tech's season-opener for next season.
Virginia Tech to play South Carolina in primetime to begin 2025 season
Next season, Virginia Tech is beginning the season in Atlanta against South Carolina, but the date for the game was listed as either Sunday Aug. 31 or Monday, Sept. 1. Wednesday night when the Gamecocks schedule was released, that date on the game was Aug. 31, which means the Hokies begin the season in primetime on Sunday night against Shane Beamer and his Gamecocks.
According to Alan Cole of Gamecockscoop, the game will be a stand-alone game at night. Oh boy, what the Hokies roster will look like that night remains to be seen, however, it's going to look vastly different than the one that ended the season a week and a half ago with a win over the Cavaliers. Regardless of what the roster looks like, this is going to be a difficult season-opener, and having Tech on the national stage for the whole country to see as they are rebuilding their roster yet again.
