Another year and another Virginia Tech baseball downfall is in the works. The Hokies were rolling after taking two out of three against Louisville and Notre Dame and sweeping Wake Forest on the road in between. They cracked the Top 25 and were trending to be another lock for the NCAA Tournament. However, we’ve seen this before.

Since taking two out of three over the Iriah, Virginia Tech was swept at home by Florida State and then lost two out of three against Duke and North Carolina. Tuesday night at home, Liberty came in and routed the Hokies, 13-4, leaving them searching for more answers. They have a few days off before they need to find as many answers as possible this weekend in a three-game road series at Pittsburgh.

Virginia Tech baseball faces a big three-game weekend series at Pittsburgh

Raise your hand if you thought at the beginning of the season that the Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh baseball series would be a must-win series for the Hokies? Here we are. The Panthers are coming into the series at 6-15 in ACC play and near the basement with California. The Hokies are 11-13 in conference play and 27-17 overall. Pitt is 20-21 overall.

On paper, this should be a series win, but as we learned with the Hokies softball team two weeks ago, games are not won on paper. Virginia Tech went to Pittsburgh and dropped two out of three games to a Panthers’ team looking to find a way into the ACC Tournament. Bad series loss.

This would be a “bad series loss” for John Szefc’s team if it were to happen this weekend. Brent Renfrow is looking at his biggest start of the season on Friday, looking to get his team a win to begin the weekend. A series loss would hurt the Hokies in terms of the NCAA Tournament.
