When Massachusetts Class of 2027 quarterback Peter Bourque had his recruiting rolling, James Franklin and Penn State were right in the mix for him. The Tabor Academy standout in Marion, Mass., kept in touch with Franklin and the Nittany Lions staff, but he ended up committing to the University of Michigan.
However, since that day happened, a lot has changed. I mean a lot. First, Penn State fired Franklin in October last fall; however, you knew the veteran coach wasn't going to be unemployed for long. Six weeks after he was given his walking papers in State College, he ended up as the head coach at Virginia Tech.
Then, a couple of weeks later, Michigan sent shockwaves through college football by parting ways with head coach Sherrone Moore. As soon as that happened in December, things began moving for a lot of commits in the Wolverines Classes of 2026 and 2027 with committed recruits. Bourque ended up de-committing and reopening his recruiting.
When he did, he had major programs in the mix for him. However, when the dust settled, he picked Franklin, quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien, and Virginia Tech. O'Brien was with Franklin at Penn State, so there was a lot of familiarity with him for Bourque.

Content creator Brooks Austin of The Film Guy Network ranked the QBs competing at Elite 11 Finals based solely on the film he has watched of them. He ranked the Top 18 signal callers who will be in Southern California in the Elite 11 Finals, the nation's premier Quarterback camp series and competition.
Coming in at No. 2 was Bourque. He finished right behind Florida commit Davin Davidson. Bourque opened some eyes in New Jersey in April at an Elite 11 Regional.
Bourque has been on Virginia Tech and Franklin's radar since he de-committed from Michigan. He has drawn rave reviews from different scouts at different outlets, but if your final three are Georgia, Penn State, and Virginia Tech under James Franklin, you are a top recruit. It'll be interesting to see how things go for Bourque in Los Angeles and how scouts feel about him after competing against some of the nation's top signal callers.
