When Virginia Tech decided to fire Brent Pry last Sunday, following another disappointing effort, a 45-26 loss at home to Old Dominion, you knew there was going to be fallout not only with the current roster, but with the commitments in the upcoming recruiting classes.
Cornerback Dante Lovett left and is in the Transfer Portal after Pry was let go, and slowly, the Hokies are losing commitments in the Class of 2026, which wasn't really a big class to begin with. Now, with a quarterback secured in the Class of 2027, the Hokies are losing a prized signal-caller who committed last month.
Class of 2027 QB Ben Musser de-commits from Virginia Tech
Ben Musser committed to Virginia Tech in early August and was on campus as recently as two weeks ago when the Hokies hosted Vanderbilt, but following the school parting ways with Pry, Musser has de-committed and reopened his recruiting, according to Rivals.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Georgia native is the 22nd-ranked quarterback and the 40th-ranked prospect out of his home state, according to 247Sports. As a sophomore, he threw for almost 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for nearly 800. He is a dual-threat QB that Virginia Tech has had success with, but now it's back to the drawing board for whoever the next coach is.
Philip Montgomery's future is up in the air in Blacksburg after assuming the interim coaching duties following Pry's firing, and he will still handle the play-calling duties, now from the sideline after sitting in the box during the first three games against South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Old Dominion.
There will be more de-commitments likely coming for the Hokies, and after struggling to land one in the Class of 2026, getting one in the next cycle was huge, but it ended up being for not.
