When Virginia Tech fired football coach Brent Pry on Sunday, that meant that on Monday, a 30-day Transfer Portal window would open for players in the program. By firing Pry this early in the season after just three games, any player who wishes to redshirt and enter the portal can do so by saving a year of eligibility.

It didn't take long on Monday for that to happen, as promising young cornerback Dante Lovett is entering the portal, as reported by Pete Nakos, who said that Lovett's agent told him.

As mentioned above, Lovett is a promising young player who played some last year and impressed, and was going to be a huge part of the Hokies' secondary this year, but the Crofton, Maryland native is leaving after three years and should be a sought-after player this portal cycle.

In three games this season, Lovett has six tackles, and last year, he recorded his career-high in Blacksburg with 20. The 6-foot-0, 200-pound Lovett is a junior and will have two more years of eligibility remaining starting next year.

This is not surprising to see Lovett enter the portal and forgo his remaining time at Virginia Tech. The question now becomes just how many more players decide to bolt in the next 29 days? They have some time, but you get the feeling that more are going to, and some big names at that.

On Sunday, top Class of 2026 recruit Thomas Wilder announced that he was reopening his recruitment following the news of Pry's firing, and another commit in next year's class, Andrew Rogers, is all certain to flip his recruitment and likely end up at Tennessee, where he visited over the weekend after Virginia Tech staff canceled his visit for the Old Dominion game.
