Virginia Tech coaching search gets further complicated after another high-profile firing

Things are getting harder by the week.

When Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry in September, they were the second power conference school to move on from their coach after UCLA fired DaShaun Foster. Since that Sunday afternoon on Sept. 14 in Blacksburg, there have been several high-profile jobs that have opened up.

Penn State fired James Franklin two weeks ago, Florida fired Billy Napier last weekend, and on Sunday night, maybe the biggest job came open when LSU fired Brian Kelly one day after an embarrassing loss at home to No. 3 Texas A&M in Baton Rouge.

LSU firing Brian Kelly further complicates Virginia Tech's coaching search

Now, let's be clear about one thing: LSU is not going to steal Virginia Tech's top candidates, but between this job opening up and others that will open up, it will complicate the search for not only Virginia Tech but across the country.

You can make the case that LSU, Penn State, and Florida are the three most desired jobs available. You can bet that many high-profile coaches currently at their schools are going to be linked to a lot of the jobs, and when the dust settles, there are going to be more desirable jobs to open.

Now that Kelly is fired at LSU, does Virginia Tech make a pitch for the former Notre Dame coach? There are crazier options out there that are available, but the search committee, which includes Bruce Arians, at least reaching out makes sense.

Other jobs make sense for Kelly, like Penn State, or he can sit back and wait to see what else opens, whether through a firing or a coaching bolting for one of the open positions. Regardless of what happens with Kelly, Franklin, Napier, and others, this is going to be the craziest coaching cycle we have ever seen in college football.
