Recruiting is beginning to pick up for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and the Hokies in the Class of 2026. Stuck with just a couple of commitments a month ago, seven new commits over the last month or so has the Hokies with nine.
Last Thursday, Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Thomas Wilder. As Green Run High School rising junior Tayron Whitehead attended his teammate's commitment, he got a phone call from one of Pry's top recruiters, Fontel Mines. There was a purpose for the call and proved once again how valuable Mines is to Pry and the program.
Virginia Tech coach Fontel Mines extends offer during commitment
As Wilder was committing to Virginia Tech, Mines called up and offered Tayron Whitehead, a rising prospect in the Class of 2027, a scholarship. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound defensive back is the latest to receive an offer from the Hokies from Virginia Beach.
Virginia Tech became the latest to offer 2027 Virginia Beach (Va.) Green Run safety Tayron Whitehead — and the timing was perfect.

Wilder was a huge pick-up for Virginia Tech, and it was a must-win recruiting battle. As far as Whitehead goes, he also has early offers from Colorado State and Syracuse, but the Green Run to Blacksburg continues to strengthen over the last two years, which will keep the Hokies in Whitehead's recruitment as it goes along.
Virginia Tech currently has Keylen Adams, Zeke Chinwike, and Knahlij Harrell on their roster for the upcoming season, while they have commitments from Class of 2026 Green Run players Kamren Johnson, Wilder, and Zaevion Cleveland.
It's been widely known that Mines is the Hokies top recruiter and expect a big push with Whitehead who will no doubt garner more interest over his final two years of high school ball. Expect Whitehead to take a visit or two to Virginia Tech during the 2025 season. There are seven home games for the Hokies this upcoming season to pick to attend and be a priority recruit in the next cycle.
