After an offseason that once saw some major roster turnover, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team begins the 2026-27 season on Tuesday night at home with a non-conference game against Coppin State. Veteran coach Mike Young will get an opportunity to see his team in game action for the first time this fall in games at that count, not scrimmages.

Despite losing some key players to the Transfer Portal, Young and his staff added some key players through the portal to go along with the three players that were key that he retained: forwards Tyler Johnson and Amani Hansberry, along with guard Ben Hammond.

This time around, with the addition of players through the portal, Young added some college basketball veterans, as well as players with some eligibility remaining after this year, should they decide to return to Blacksburg. Young needs to get some questions answered early in the non-conference schedule, as things get tougher starting next week with a neutral-site game against Iowa, plus matchups later in the season at West Virginia and at home against Ole Miss.

Some names to know as the season begins, including transfers who have been added: guard Jaylen Curry from Oklahoma State, guard Isaiah Elohim from Florida Atlantic, forward Miles Heide from San Diego State, forward Kuol Atak from Oklahoma, and promising sophomore Musa Sagnia from North Carolina State. Another player to keep an eye on is Clemson transfer Butta Johnson.

Virginia Tech is coming off a frustrating 2025-26 season that saw them finish 19-13 after being eliminated in the first round of the ACC Tournament in overtime by Wake Forest and coming up short of an NCAA Tournament berth. After being bounced in the conference tournament, the Hokies announced that they would not be accepting a bid to any lower postseason tournament.

That gave Young and his staff a start in rebuilding the roster with the turnover they got from players leaving in the portal, and Tobi Lawal going to the NBA. Now, against Coppin State, Hokies fans get to see for the first time what this roster looks like in the season opener. Here is everything you need to know about the season opener, including how to watch and much more.
