After the Virginia Tech men's basketball team saw its season come to a disappointing end in the first round of the ACC Tournament with an overtime loss to Wake Forest in Charlotte in March, all eyes for Hokies forward Tobi Lawal turned toward the NBA Draft.
After entering the NBA Draft process last season, Lawal withdrew and returned to Blacksburg for the 2025-26 season. Things didn't go as planned, as an injury forced him to miss some time in the middle of the season, but once he returned and proved he was healthy, he ended up being picked in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.
After playing in the NBA Summer League for the Mavericks, Lawal is getting ready for his first NBA training camp this fall. Before he thinks about that, the former Virginia Tech standout will be suiting up for Great Britain's training camp for the EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying Window, which will be played later this month.

One other NBA player will be joining Lawal on the team, Amari Williams of the Boston Celtics. Head coach Marc Steutel will have a mixture of NBA, EuroLeague, NCAA, and domestic experience players. Quinn Ellis is also part of the roster, and he will be getting ready to head over to St. John's this fall to play in the Big East for coach Rick Pitino.
This isn't the first time that Lawal will be playing on this level for Great Britain, and the former VCU standout, before coming to Virginia Tech, will be part of a roster that will open play on Aug. 27 against Switzerland, before they return home to host Slovakia on Aug. 30.
In 23 games as a senior for the Hokies, Lawal averaged 12.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks a game for veteran coach Mike Young.
