It was a busy, but very successful month of June for veteran Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young. He added some talent to the 2025-26 roster, and he'll have two potential NBA Draft picks on his roster next season. The Hokies are expected to be a much better team next winter, and who knows, could they knock on the door of an NCAA Tournament berth? Let's review June and some of the news that was made in the month.
Virginia Tech secures NBA talent Neoklis Advalas
When Neoklis Avdalas came over the the United States from Greece to enter the NBA Draft process, the talented player visited Virginia Tech and gave a verbal commitment to the Hokies if he withdrew from the NBA Draft. He withdrew and kept his word.
Avdalas kept true to his word and signed with the Hokies shortly after withdrawing from the NBA Draft process. By committing to Young, he is one of the most highly-regarded incoming freshmen the program has had in some time. His highlights alone should excite Hokies fans about what he could do in his first year of college basketball.
Virginia Tech has two 2026 NBA Draft hopefuls
With Avdalas joining the Hokies, it gives Young two potential NBA Draft picks on his roster next season. Avdalas was a projected second-round pick last week, but by going to college for a year, he could work his way up into a first-round selection, something On3 predicted last week.
Tobi Lawal withdrew back in May from the NBA Draft process, which wasn't a really big surprise. Like Avdalas, he is a projected pick in next June's draft, but as a late second-round pick. Both players give Young plenty of flexibility in terms of the lineups he can use, and both will be tough to defend for opposing teams.
Virginia Tech schedule coming into focus
Last month, the ACC released the opponents, home and away, for each ACC men's basketball team, and the conference didn't do Young and the Hokies any favors. In June, two non-conference opponents for Virginia Tech were confirmed.
In June, the Hokies learned who two of their non-conference foes will be, which should nearly round out that portion of the schedule. In November, Young's team will travel to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., to play Providence out of the Big East. Then, one month later, the Hokies will travel to South Carolina to play the Gamecocks in the annual ACC/SEC Challenge.
