After suffering a 71-52 loss to Iowa last Sunday night, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team did what good teams do, they bounced back. Wednesday night, they beat UNC Asheville and Saturday, they took care of Coppin State, 86-51, in another non-conference game at Cassell Coliseum.

As has been the story this season for the Hokies, it was a balanced effort from Megan Duffy's team against the Eagles and Virginia Tech turned up the defensive pressure over the final three quarters against Coppin State. Here are some key observations after the Hokies improved to 3-1.

Key observations from Virginia Tech's win over Coppin State

  • Rose Micheaux continues to be a huge factor on both ends early in the season for Duffy. Against the Eagles, she recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Safe to say she needs to stay healthy this season.
  • Carys Baker finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks for the Hokies. She continues to play very well at both ends of the floor and once she gets her 3-point shot going down, it gives Duffy another offensive option.
  • Carleigh Wenzel had 12 points, but she once again got to the basket forcing Coppin State to foul her. In the first possession of the game, she put the ball on the floor and was fouled going to the basket.
  • Utah transfer Lani White had 10 points for the Hokies and continues to get more comfortable in Duffy's system.
  • Mackenzie Nelson had six points and six assists for the Hokies, while Matilda Ekh had seven points and five assists. Spreading things around is what Duffy's team needs to do this season to be successful.
  • How good was Virginia Tech's defense over the final three quarters? They held the Eagles to just 30% from the field.

Virginia Tech returns to the court Tuesday night hosting Rutgers in another non-conference game and a step up in competition for Duffy and her team.
