After dropping the first game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at English Field against UNC-Greensboro, the Virginia Tech baseball team responded by winning the final two games of the series, including the deciding game on Monday afternoon.

The Hokies dropped the opener Saturday, 6-2, but rebounded for a 6-2 victory of their own on Sunday, before they pounded out 16 hits on Monday afternoon to win the series against a Spartans team that came into Blacksburg after a 4-0 win last week over ACC powerhouse Wake Forest. This is a good series win for Virginia Tech early in the season.

Five Virginia Tech players had a multi-hit game with leadoff batter Jared Davis going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Collecting two hits each were Treyson Hughes, David Lewis, Garrett Michel, and Jackson Cherry.

Cherry had a two-run double in the second inning to tie the game, 2-2, and David McCann had a home run in the fifth inning. Michel and Davis each added RBI singles to help Virginia Tech's lead grow to 8-2.

UNC-Greensboro didn't go quietly in the top of the ninth inning. Down six runs, they pushed across a run and loaded the bases with two outs. Virginia Tech coach John Szefc called on Lafayette transfer Luke Craytor to get the final out with a strikeout, leaving the tying run in the on-deck circle.

This is a big early-season series win against a program that beat two ACC teams last season and already owns a two-hit shutout of the Demon Deacons last week. These could be big wins come NCAA Tournament selection time in May should the Hokies be on the bubble.

Virginia Tech will host James Madison on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock before they head to Greenville, North Carolina for three games on the East Carolina campus against Indiana State, Kent State, and East Carolina as part of the Keith LeClair Classic.
