Going into a pivotal Transfer Portal window, the need was a simple one for Virginia Tech baseball coach John Szefc and his staff: pitching. And lots of it.
After getting bounced in the NCAA Tournament, after being swept out of the Los Angeles Regional by Cal Poly and UCLA the last weekend of May, the Hokies flew back to Blacksburg with the portal opening as soon as their plane touched down.
To Szefc's credit, there was a monumental retention in terms of players that needed to be retained. They are bringing back most of their key positional players, including freshman Ethan Ball. However, when it comes to pitching, it was a need, and the Hokies' staff has been addressing it. They picked up a pair of additions over the last couple of days that should help in 2027.
Virginia Tech baseball adds depth from the Transfer Portal
Virginia Tech added a pair of left-handed pitchers AJ Camp from Charlotte and George Adams from Florida International University. Both are arms that will likely be added to the bullpen for Szefc.
Camp, a redshirt sophomore, made 20 appearances for the 49ers and worked 28 innings with a 4.50 ERA in 2026. He allowed 30 hits and 13 runs with 15 strikeouts and 11 walks. Those numbers are not going to jump off the page at you, but you have to think Virginia Tech can work with him to lower those numbers.
As far as Adams goes, he made 16 appearances, six starts for FIU, and worked 45.2 innings with 45 strikeouts and a 6.31 ERA for the Panthers. He just completed his sophomore year.
Virginia Tech has added nine pitchers this portal cycle after losing some to the portal and others to the MLB Draft and using up all of their eligibility. If Virginia Tech can figure out its pitching staff, with the returning position players, 2027 could be a big season in Blacksburg.
