Last weekend, the Virginia Tech baseball team was three outs away from a historic win in the NCAA Tournament. After losing to Cal Poly in their first game in the Los Angeles Regional last Friday night, the Hokies were stuck in an elimination game against UCLA, the No. 1 overall seed in the 64-team field.

The Bruins were knocked off on the first day of the tournament by Saint Mary's and dropped into the losers' bracket. Virginia Tech had the odds stacked against them, but they took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Head coach John Szefc did what he needed to do to get the ball to the ninth with the lead and was left with left-hander Madden Clement looking to end UCLA's season.

Easier said than done. Clement allowed back-to-back home runs to tie the game, and then the Bruins walked off the Hokies after Clement was pulled to bring Virginia Tech's season to a stunning end. When the Hokies returned from Los Angeles, the portal opened on June 1, and some Tech players have entered. On Saturday, it was reported that Clement is entering.

Virginia Tech pitcher Madden Clement reportedly entering the Transfer Portal

According to Josh Poslusny of Virginia Tech On SI and Tech Sideline, Clement is entering the portal. He worked just 13.2 innings this season in eight appearances, which included five starts. He allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and 13 strikeouts. During his time in Blacksburg, Clement went 2-1 in 38 innings of work. It's not surprising to see Madden enter the market and look for a bigger role elsewhere.

Virginia Tech now has four players hitting the portal, with two other pitchers, Chase Swift and Ben Weber, entering, as well as first baseman and catcher Anderson French. Weber has already announced that he's returning to Xavier for the 2027 season. Keep up with the Virginia Tech baseball Transfer Portal tracker right here.
